Reference numberLH000588DescriptionThe building occupied by Oaklands Tea and Luncheon Rooms and by F. J. McLaren, Tobacconist and Hairdresser was Higham Buildings. In 1861 Mary Higham purchased Lot 417 on the corner of High and Market Streets and by 1869 she and her son had established a successful retail store, M. Higham & Sons, which was extended along Market Street in 1880 and further altered in 1892. In 1912 the single storied buildings and Higham & Sons were demolished and replaced by a new building designed by Oldham & Cox. The work of laying tram lines involved lifting up the jarrah blocks (3" by 6" by 5") which were the base of the existing roads and which were finally replaced by concrete in 1954.Date1905Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
