Built and delivered in 1897 by Palmers , Newcastle, United Kingdom for the Government of Western Australia.; the Penguin was 208 gross tonnage, 120 foot by 24 foot by 11 foot 4 inches and made 10 knots. It was a general service vessel used primarily to maintain light house and buoyage facilities on the coast and to visit Rottnest Island to replenish stores.
