Heritage ThemesDEMOGRAPHIC SETTLEMENT & MOBILITY: SettlementsStatement Of SignificanceHouse, 13 Agnes Street, a single storey house constructed 1911 with timber framing and weatherboard cladding and a corrugated iron clad roof has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: the place has some aesthetic value as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture; the place has some historic value as an early twentieth century residence that demonstrates the settlement and development of the Beaconsfield area, and; it is representative of the working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryAgnes St was gazetted in 1906. The land on which house 13 Agnes Street stands was vacant in 1899 and owned by William Dobson, a carpenter. In 1900 a cottage had been built for Dobson and it was occupied by James White, a lumper. Dobson was the owner/occupier in the 1901/02 rate period. From 1902 to 1905 Dobson had tenants before once again becoming the owner/occupier in 1905/06 and remained so until at least 1920/21 when ownership changed to Agnes Weir (nee Alexander) and the occupant was George Frederick Hannah. Agnes Weir was the owner until the mid 1950s when she died. Agnes had two tenants; Eliza Ann Birch from 1925 to 1931 and Albert Edward Luft from 1931 to 1956. On the Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated November 1908 the house is shown as a wooden dwelling with a front verandah, galvanized iron outbuildings and a WC at the rear. The house was originally known as cottage 35. In 1935/36 the street number changed to 9 and again to its current number of 13 in 1963/64. The house is on Lot 5 of 38, Location 7. A Heritage Assessment was prepared in Sept 2009 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for the proposed construction of a studio / deck at the rear of the site. Physical Description13 Agnes Street is a single storey timber and iron house dating from c1900 and designed in the Victorian Georgian style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber weatherboards across the front facade and fibre cement sheeting to the side. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron bullnose roof supported by turned and chamfered timber posts and is enclosed with timber lattice at one end. The symmetrical front façade has a central front door with side and fanlights flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows. There are two rendered chimneys evident. There is a high rendered masonry wall with timber gate to the front boundary line.
