Typical timber framed single storey cottage dating from the first decades of the twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.ArchaeologyConditionHistoryFifth Avenue is not the fifth of any avenues or streets. Speculation is that the ‘Fifth’ is for George V, who, as the Duke of York, visited the state in 1901. This was the time that the owner, Simpson, called his land the Duke of York Estate. A street nearby is York Street. Rates Books list the property as vacant in 1912/15 and by 1916/17 a cottage had been erected. In 1925 plans for additions were approved. In 1967 a garage was added and later replaced in 1992 / 93. The property was sewered in 1987. Physical DescriptionSingle storey timber framed and weatherboard clad walls and a tile (probably not original) hipped roof and brick chimney with corbelling house. The zincalume bull nosed verandah is supported by turned timber post between decorative timber brackets.
