Heritage ThemesDEMOGRAPHIC SETTLEMENT & MOBILITY: SettlementsStatement Of SignificanceHOUSE, 8 MARTHA STREET a single-storey, rendered masonry and iron house with an asymmetrical façade is a representative example of late 19th-century residential development in the area.
Constructed in 1900, the house reflects the expansion of Fremantle during the late 19th century, a time when the Western Australian gold rush brought economic growth and increased settlement. Its timber-framed construction and iron roofing are indicative of the resourceful building practices of the time, particularly in working-class and middle-class areas where accessible and durable materials were favoured.
Designed as an example of modest 19th-century housing, it represents the daily lives of the working- and middle-class residents who contributed to the development of Fremantle. As part of Fremantle’s historic urban fabric, the house contributes to the collective identity of the area. It reflects the residential styles of the late 19th century.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryA 1913 PWD plan shows a small brick or stone residence on this site, with a verandah inset across the western portion of its front elevation and a small verandah in the centre of its rear elevation. The building is aligned very close to the eastern boundary of the lot, although the adjacent lot is vacant save some small outbuildings to the rear. A 1993 photograph shows a smooth-rendered building with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The front windows are aluminium sliding windows not contemporary with the building. The low-pitch skillion verandah inset across the western portion of the front elevation and gable-roof section that completes the elevation match the footprint shown in 1913.Physical DescriptionHouse, 18 Martha Street is a single storey brick and zincalume house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture.
