Heritage ThemesDEMOGRAPHIC SETTLEMENT & MOBILITY: Immigration emigration & refugeesStatement Of SignificanceHouse, 81 South Street, is a typical rendered masonry and iron originally single storey house dating from c1910. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place has been altered.ArchaeologyConditionHistoryNote: Houses shown on the November 1908 sewerage diagram for Lot 2 of 2B and 3B of 31 CSL 7 are not consistent with placement of houses shown on Latitude software for the present day. The 1909-10 rate book shows Lot 2 of 2B and 3B of 31 CSL 7 were cottages owned by John Peterson, occupied by Elizabeth Brown (then no.195) and Bessie Chisholm (then no.193). In 1924-25 these were still numbered 193 and 195, owned by Emanuel Micoff, occupied by Reginald Smith and Reginald Freeman respectively. In 1939-40 Lot 2 of 2B and 3B of 31 CSL 7 was now numbered 77 and 79 both owned by Henry Rumbold, with no.77 occupied by Peter O’Brien. The 1958-59 rate record shows that no.77 Lot 2 of 2B and 3B of 31 CSL 7 changed to the current no.81 and was owned and occupied by Richard and Lillian Francis. There is no mention of the old no.79. The new no.79 at this time had possibly been no.63?, but this is difficult to discern from the microfiche records. Therefore, from the rate books up until 1958-59 it cannot be determined when the existing dwelling at this address took on its current form. The place was included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993. Physical DescriptionThe place has been altered with a second storey addition. there is a limestone rubble wall to the front boundary line.AssociationPlace UseOriginal Use – RESIDENTIAL: Single storey residencePresent Use – RESIDENTIAL: Two storey residenceArchitectural StylesIntegrity/AuthenticityPlace TypeIndividual Building or Group
