The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryThe house was built 1923-24 for Maria Stapleton. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle") A Heritage Assessment was prepared in June 2009 by Heritage and Conservation Professionals for a DA submission to Council (DA97/09) for a proposed rear addition. Physical DescriptionHouse, 99 South Street is a single storey masonry and Colorbond house constructed in the Victorian Georgian style of Architecture. The front facade is tuck pointed brick, the side walls are rendered. The roof is hipped and clad with Colorbond. The verandah is under a separate bullnose roof supported by turned and chamfered timber posts. The symmetrical front façade has a central front door flanked on either side by timber framed sash windows. A red brick chimney with brick corbelling is evident. There is a recent limestone and steel wall to the front boundary line with a steel gate set between two limestone posts.
