Heritage ThemesDEMOGRAPHIC SETTLEMENT & MOBILITY: Government policyStatement Of SignificanceArchaeologyConditionHistoryThe 1947 aerial photograph (Landgate) shows that only one house was built at that time between Caesar Street and Fifth Avenue on the south side of South Street. The c1950 sewerage map (No. 2196) and the 1953 aerial photograph (Landgate) shows the same. The house straddled current day Nos. 191-195. It was a stone house with front and rear verandahs, a well and several outbuildings. Post Office Directories in 1949 list this house as No 193, occupied by Robert Lennon since c1930. It probably dated back to circa 1915 when the section of South Street between Lewington Street and Fifth Avenue was occupied by a dairy, Smith Brothers, Thomas & Albert. The stone house was demolished between 1953 and 1965. The 1965 aerial photograph (Landgate) shows that a row of uniform sized houses from 171-197 have all been built. The block was all State Housing Commission housing. Later aerial photos (Landgate) show that in 2002 the first of the rear subdivisions occurred (No. 189) followed by No. 191 in 2006. Since then, in the last ten years, several of the houses have been demolished and the row of houses is changing in nature from the original small scale, modest state housing. In February 2016, the State Heritage Office determined that while the block of houses is of some historical interest, it does not warrant further assessment for entry on the State Register of Heritage Places.Physical DescriptionAssociationPlace UseOriginal Use – RESIDENTIAL: Single storey residenceIntegrity/AuthenticityPlace TypeIndividual Building or Group
