The Federal Hotel (known as Rosie O'Grady's 1996 to 2016) was constructed in 1887 for James Albert Herbert. It was designed by George Inskip and built from local stone and brick by Jordine and Ruthven. The hotel opened in July 1887 and was described in the newspapers of the day as far in advance of anything erected in the state at the time. In 1904 extensive additions were carried out by Mr J. Brownlie and involved the installation of a modern sewerage system, a large wing on the south side, an arch in the main entrance and the installation of some leadlight windows.
