Reference numberLH000004DescriptionThis drawing of Fremantle in June 1829 (by Ensign Dale, 63rd Regiment) shows the "Fort on the mainland" set up by Captain Fremantle on May 1829 and manned by sailors and marines of HMS Challenger under Lieutenant Henry. At this Fort, marked by the Flagpost, Governor Stirling proclaimed and founded the Colony on June 17 1829.The present Flagpost is almost on this identical spot. Arthur's Head is on the right of the Fort. Garden Island and Carnac Island are seen in the distance.
