Reference numberLH000224DescriptionCasket presented to the Queen by the pupils of Princess May High School. Shows the School building opened on Monday 5th August 1901 by Lady Lawley, and the school badge. The colours for the badge were chosen by Miss Sutton - navy for strength and white for purity. The motto was 'persta praesta'. The Duchess of Cornwell and York bestowed her name on the school from a grandstand by Victoria Quay in 1901. Previously the Duke and Duchess had come down the river in the "Manx Fairy". In 1947 the Education Department officially raised the status of the school to High School. The building was used as an annex for John Curtin High School until the end of 1968. Opened as the Community Education Centre on 1.11.1975.Date1954Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
