Reference numberLH000264DescriptionThe Esplanade. In 1902/1903 this area of approximately 7 acres was reclaimed. The Norfolk Island Pines were planted at the suggestion of CR. Frank Nicholas, c 1908. The Maitland Brown monument was unveiled on 8th February 1913. It was erected by George Julius Brockman to the memories of the explorers, Panting, Harding and Goldwyer and in memory of Maitland Brown. It was designed and executed by Pietro G. Porcelli. Asian seamen were lodged for months in huts under trees in the foreground following the outbreak of the Pacific War 1942. (Source: Mr S.
