Reference numberLH000282DescriptionHotel and flats, Rottnest Island. Originally the Governor's House. Design prepared by the Royal Engineer's Office, Perth in 1858. Completed in 1864, but not built according to the original drawings, ie similar in style but larger. An upper level verandah was added in 1880. Between 1870 and 1883 a billiard room was added to the south of the building. Governor Hampton was the first to take up residence. When the popularity of the residence declined it was converted into flats (1919). In 1953 it became a hotel and the verandahs were enclosed: the upper to provide more sleeping accomodation and bathrooms, the lower to house a bar. The verandahs have since been reopened and an extension made to the northern side of the hotel.Daten.d.PhotographerOrloff, A. Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
