Reference numberLH000286DescriptionYachting, South Beach. Towards the end of 1908, the Mayor of Fremantle Mr. W.A. Murphy, persuaded the Council that South Beach possessed enormous potential for development. At his request Council provided him with 10 pounds worth of advertising material, together with an album of views of Fremantle. His successor, Mr. E.H. Fothergill was equally enthusiastic in promoting the project and approached the Governor, Sir Gerald Strickland to visit and declare the South Beach season "open". This he did on 15.11.1909 to a crowd of 35000 people. The jetty was built in 1916 and reconstructed in 1925. Crowds flocked to the beach each summer until the 1950's.
