The building was originally the Fremantle Literary Institute. It was opened on Wednesday 15th March 1899 by Elias Solomon. Architects: Messrs Wilkinson, Smith and Wilson. The library moved to the ground floor of the Civic Administration Building on the corner of Newman and William Streets on 18.03.1974 and was renamed Fremantle City Library.
