After 1894 left Labor Party and came to W.A.; merchant and master mariner, Fremantle. 1907-1909 Mayor of Fremantle. Then commercial traveller for Seppelts. M.L.A. Balmain N.S.W. 1891-1894 (Labor). M.L.A. Fremantle June 1910 - October 1911 (Liberal).Described as "The Angel of Death" while employed as time keeper at Henderson Naval Base 1915-1920. This was a time of fluctuating economic fortunes and men were employed and then retrenched. 1916 - bought a dredge "Sir William Matthews" from Colombo for the State Government.
