Reference numberLH000521VDescriptionThe Mayor, Sir Frederick Samson replies. After a brief address by His Excellency the Governor in which he complimented the City on its concern for its past and traditions, His Worship the Mayor replied in simple but moving words - " This is a proud day in the history of Fremantle. As the Archdeacon has reminded us, men have at all times made for themselves Emblems symbolising the affection and duty which they owe to their leaders, their cities, their regiments and so on. We are proud of the Emblems which you have presented to us this day, Your Excellency; and proud of the fact that they have been granted to us as a mark of honour, a recognition of the importance of our city. Generations yet unborn will look on these Emblems and be reminded of the honourable past of their city; and, we hope, will be inspired to continue to uphold the ideals of their forefathers to build a good life by peaceful industry, courage and endurance; and to uphold the cause of justice and righteousness, and good government. We thank you, Your Excellency, for graciously consenting to participate in this occasion; and by so doing reminding us all that it is from our Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth, that such marks of honour as we have received today emanate. God bless the Queen!" The service was now ended, and the emblems were carried in solemn procession to the Town Hall. Taken on 11 July 1971.Date1971Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
