Architects Terry and Oakden. The Hall next to the Church was demolished to make way for the Wesley Chambers in 1928-1972. Partial view of the Wesleyan Manse (1893) (hidden by E.Wood and Son.) The Fremantle Gas and Coke Co. Ltd. later had a modern office in front of this building. Further along the street can be seen the old Fremantle Gas and Coke Co. Ltd. offices and a gasometer. Stone cottages replaced by Elders Woolstores in 1917. Rear of G.Wood and Son. The firm purchased lot 326 Cantonment Street in 1898. Cost of building 8,250 pounds. By 1900 a full page advertisement appeared in the W.A. Postal Directory showing the new building with the name "G. Wood, Son and Co." surmounting the top storey and beneath it, above the ground floor "Wholesale Grocers and Importers". Also in the scene were three senior staff members and a horse drawn lorry piled with cartons and boxes, plus a pushbike on the footpath. The building housed the firm and activities (despite interruptions by disastrous fires in 1915 and 1922) until 1966 when the business was transferred to new premises at the corner of Carrington and Clarke Streets. See: "The sign of the Anchor in the West" by J. Lee and A.W. Barrett. (664) Commercial Travellers Club, to the left of G.Wood and Son, was built by C. Moore and completed on 10.06.1912. J.F. Allen was the architect. Fremantle Railway Station opened on 1.07.1907. Bennett and Burnside, grocers in Adelaide Street. Dave Freecorn took over from Bennett and Burnside in August 1932. Fisher Beard's (drapery) Adelaide Street. According to Kerr, the building was completed in November 1908 for 3,500 pounds. Architect - Percy J. McNeece. Fisher Beard occupied this building (later Charlie Carters to 1988) until 1928. From 1928 to 1957 Fisher Beard's occupied a building on the corner of Adelaide and Queen Streets. This was demolished in October 1968 for Freecorns (later Treasureway and Chain Reaction) which was opened on 15.08.1969. According to Mr S. Jones (1985) Mr Dave Freecorn checked on the progress of the building everyday. Unfortunately he did not see the opening, for he died on 21.03.1969.
