Reference numberLH000531DescriptionThe Candle Factory, South Street, corner Smith Street, Hilton. H.Marsh and Company (Hugh McCallum, Manager) began operations in Russell Street, Fremantle in 1896. A Factory was established in 1898 on the south side of South Street on an allotment surrounded by dense dryandra thicket. "Marsh's extract of soap" was a detergent of the period. (110 grams in a packet). Towards the end of 1901 the firm name changed to Kitchen Sons, Marsh and various types of soap were the chief items of production, which continued until the factory closure in 1908, by which time the firm's title was Kitchen and Sons. Operations were resumed in Napier Street, North Fremantle; being the northern portion of the present Shell installation. Kitchen and Sons held a large portion of the West Australian market with their "Velvet" and "Witch" soaps and "Electrine" candles in addition to being local agents for McRobertsons Confectionery. C1928 (after) a disastrous fire, operations combined with those of W.H. Burford and Sons. Kitchen's Manager, Mr A. Yde taking control. (Vice Mr William Slattery, whose son had begun operations as Peak Products, later Westralian Soaps.) 1900 - H.
