Reference numberLH000532DescriptionView of Markets building, South Terrace, Fremantle. In 1897 a competition for the design of the Markets was announced. Apparently due to lack of finance the project was delayed. Only when the State Government offered a grant of 2000 pounds did the undertaking commence. First prize for the design was won by the architects Oldham and Eales. Sir John Forrest laid the foundation stone on Saturday 6th November 1897. Enclosed within the stone were the metropolitan morning newspapers, a document containing an account of the ceremonies that day and current coins of the realm. Note the Council motto and old coat of arms on the facade. "nec prece nec pretio", neither by entreaty nor bribery ... to be drawn from the right path" See: 658.87 Miscellany File.
