Reference numberLH000600DescriptionThe Post Master General's Department decided to remove wires from the overhead poles between Cottesloe and Fremantle and place them underground, as moisture and proximity to the sea was causing distortion and interference to messages. 100 wires were laid in a sawn jarrah tunnel, 6" by 4", two feet below the surface. The James Street bridge, demolished in November 1964, is behind the cable reel.
