Reference numberLH000761DescriptionThe old bridge on the right was commenced in 1863 and took three years to build with convict labour. Captain Grain, R.E. and James Manning, Clerk of Works, were responsible for the design and construction. An average of 48 men, 28 in chain gangs, worked on the construction. In the early 1890s the bridge was declared unsafe and on 28.09.1898 a new bridge (to the left) was opened. In 1908 when Fremantle and North Fremantle Councils wished to extend the tramway system to North Fremantle, it was found that the new bridge was at the wrong level with an awkward approach. Inspection of the old bridge revealed that of 319 piles, 306 were absolutely sound, so it was renovated; the hump removed and the bridge widened.
