Reference numberLH000768DescriptionThe site for the asylum consisted of ten acres of land bounded by Skinner, Finnerty and Shuffrey Streets. Lieutenant Colonel E.Y.W. Henderson designed the building which was constructed by convict labour. Work began in 1861 using local limestone and a sheoak shingle roof. The first patients were admitted in 1865. From 1866 to 1867, an extra ward, designed by George Temple-Poole and built by Robert and Arthur Bunning was added. In 1890 they added a two storey wing. Two more sections were built in 1894. In 1908 the lunatics were moved to Claremont and the building was used as an Old Women's Home from 1909 to 1942.Date1897Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
