The foundation stone for the Masonic Hall was laid by Sir Archibald Burt on 18.04.1876. In the centre background is the Sailor's Rest. A Mrs T.W. Smith had for some time conducted a Strangers and Sailors Rest Society in the adjacent Masonic Hall. The foundation stone for the Sailor's Rest building was laid on Monday 9.10.1899 by the Rt. Hon.
