Reference numberLH001026DescriptionThe Orient Hotel was designed by architects Cavanagh and Cavanagh and built on the site of the old Emerald Isle (1875) and the Club Hotel (1887). It was named after the shipping company; Orient Steam Navigation Company. The Parry family took over the Orient in April 1923 and owned the freehold for fifty years during which time it was the leading residential hotel in town, accommodating many distinguished guests. During World War II, 24 beds were reserved for American submarine personnel. Board was two pounds ten shillings.
