Reference numberLH001045DescriptionThe Round House was built in 1830/1831 (to the designs of H W Reveley) as a prison with eight single storey cells and a two storey section with six rooms for entrance and Warden's Quarters. A well was dug in the courtyard 1833-1836 and a bakehouse and laundry constructed below the steps in the mid 1830s. The original steps linking the building to High Street were built by 1836 but were rebuilt to straddle the Whalers Tunnel in 1838.
