Reference numberLH001717DescriptionIn 1903 Fremantle Municipal Council permitted bathing at South Beach, with swimming costumes, between 5pm and 8am the following day. Sexes were segregated by 100 metres of beach. Plans to popularise the beach led to its official opening as ""The Brighton of the West"", on 15.11.1909, with a crowd of 35,000 people, according to the Daily News 24/11/1909. Dressing rooms, a shark proof enclosure and carnival attractions made the beach very popular in the 20s.Date1920PhotographerN. Branson, I. Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
