Reference numberLH001881DescriptionThe carnival was run by the Swan Yacht Club which formed in 1904; their club building can be seen in the centre of the photograph. The crowd is watching from the reserve at the foot of Hubble Street. On the right is Castlemaine Brewery. According to an article in the "Daily News" 11/12/1958, the main four storey section was built around 1898. The brewery and its bottling works were some distance apart, and a wheeled container (known as a torpedo) drawn by a horse was used to transport the beer and stout to the bottling works. The torpedo held about 540 gallons. For some years the brewery premises were used by the Victory Salt Refining Company to refine Rottnest salt, ie. 1930's - 1948. In 1948 the bottling works were sold to the Fremantle Sailing Club for demolition. Some of the wood and iron was used to construct their premises on Marine Terrace in the late 1950's. Demolition of the four storey section began in March 1963. On far left (behind sail) is No. 15 Riverside Road.Date1920PhotographerKeane, George Edward Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
