Reference numberLH001886DescriptionOn the left (foreground) can be seen the site of Pioneer Reserve. According to council rate records stables existed on Lots 149 and 1365 Phillimore St in 1905. Later in the year these buildings were demolished and the land acquired by the government for railway purposes. This plan, however, did not eventuate and the site became known as "Uglieland" in the early 1920's. Uglieland was a fun fair run by the Ugly Men's Association of WA (Inc) to foster the welfare of WW1 servicemen's wives and children. From funds raised the Association built homes for needy families. Uglieland ceased to function as a fun fair by 1936 and the site was used to show open-air movies. By this time, however, the area was somewhat run-down, and council proposed to convert the entire block into parks and gardens on the understanding that it would relinquish all claims should it be required by the government at a later date. In Nov 1939 the Under Secretary of Works indicated that the council could lease the land for ten years from 1/01/1940. Pioneer Reserve was officially opened and named on 3/07/1940. The large building behind is Tolley & Co. Ltd. (Lot 97, No 1 Pakenham Street), a bonded warehouse. Tolley and Co occupied the lot from 1901 to 1910/1911. The bonded warehouse carried an immense stock of wines and spirits, using a hydraulic lift and crane to facilitate handling. In the distance is the dome of the Elder Building which was opened by the premier Walter James, on 29/08/1902. It was erected for Dalgety and Co. and sold to Elders in 1927/28.
