He was a sailmaker and boatman in Fremantle and by the 1860s was master of the Speculator, the Arabian and the Brothers. His wife, Caroline Adams, was Librarian at the Fremantle Literary Institute. They had ten children. Their twin sons Ernest and Andrew were born c1864. Ernest died 1.02.1870 and Andrew 7.04.1903.
