He served with the AIF in WWI and worked for one year with Charlie Carter before opening his own store in Adelaide Street, Fremantle in August 1932. In February 1920 he married Mary E Plaistowe and they had two daughters. He was a supporter of Legacy, Master of Hounds with the WA Hunt Club and owned several racehorses.
