Reference numberLH004283DescriptionIn June 1987, archaeological excavation revealed several layers of coursed limestone blocks. This was part of the Whalers Jetty which was constructed in 1837 for the Fremantle Whaling Company, immediately west of the Whalers Tunnel. Construction began in April and in August 1837 was extended seawards to obtain a depth of 10 feet. It was a pile construction with limestone filling. The wooden piles were removed c1870.
