Reference numberLH004836DescriptionCharles Alexander Manning, 1807-1869, came to Western Australia in the very early days and became the largest landowner in Fremantle. He was interested in municipal affairs and founded the volunteer movement. He was the first Grand Master of Freemasonry and the first honorary keeper of records and collector of rates for the Fremantle Town Trust. He was an enthusiastic astronomer and built an observation tower on Manning Hall for that purpose.
