Reference numberLH005150DescriptionSouth Beach was a very popular recreational area in the 1920s and 1930s and had a shark fence to provide a safe area for swimmers. On 8th January 1932 the Daily News reported: "An exciting chase after a shark took place early this morning inside the shark-proof enclosure at South Beach and ended when Henry Gilmore jumped from a boat into the water and harpooned the monster. Two explanations were given for the presence of the shark inside the enclosure. There was an exceptionally high tide the previous evening and the shark may have come over the top of the fence. On the other hand a swimmer said there was a break in the fence and the shark had possibly got in there. The break was repaired soon after the shark was caught. It was described as measuring nine feet long and weighed about three and a half hundredweight."Date1932Photograph FormatPhotographDigital ItemYes
