Reference numberLH005297DescriptionJohn Leighton wa born in England on 15.12,1820. He enlisted in the 6th Dragoon Guards at the age of 20and at 23 met and married Margaret Sutherland.They had five children. In 1853, John was injured and became a Chelsea Pensioner. In 1856 he volunteered as a Pensioner Guard and sailed with his wife and children and 248 convicts on the Runnymede for Fremantle. Later they had three more children. John died at Grey Street on 17th October 1898 and was buried at Skinner Street. As a convict guard, John spent most of his time at Fremantle Prison and his sympathetic attitude to the convicts was reciprocated by the gift of a small handcarved box made from a packing case which was presented to him by one of the prisoners.
