The first HMAS Melbourne was from the World War one era, the 2nd Melbourne was an Aircraft Carrier, known most notable for her collision with HMAS Voyager in the 1960’s.
This plaque is associated with the 3rd ship named HMAS MELBOURNE which was an Adelaide Class Guided Missile Frigate.
This ship was launched in 1989 and decommissioned in 2019.Relevance to the CityDuring her service HMAS Melbourne served in the East Timor region and also the Persian Gulf and the defence of Australian Waters. The ship spent much time in the Australian region including many visits to Fremantle and HMAS Stirling.
This plaque was gifted to the Mayor and the City of Fremantle during one such visit in November 1997.
