There is also a motto on the plaque FAITH FOR DUTYDate22nd July 1997ProvenanceThere have been TWO ships with the name HMAS PROTECTOR in the history of the Royal Australian Navy. The first HMAS PROTECTOR was in service from before the World War one era up to World War Two.
This plaque is associated with the 2nd ship named HMAS PROTECTOR which was a trials and submarine rescue ship of the Royal Australian Navy. The ship supported the Collins Class submarines which were based south of Fremantle and was also notable involved in the search for the wreck of HMAS Sydney off the WA Coast.
This ship was launched in 1984 and decommissioned in 1998, whereupon it was sold to Defence Maritime Services.Relevance to the CityDuring her service HMAS PROTECTOR largely served in the Western Australian waters near Fremantle in support of the Collins Class submarines. This included many visits to Fremantle and HMAS Stirling.
Gifted to the Mayor & City of Fremantle by the Commanding Officer of HMAS PROTECTOR, Lieutenant Commander Paul Fryer-Hornsby on the 22nd July 1997
