There have been three ships named HMAS Canberra as part of the Royal Australian Navy and all three visited and berthed at Fremantle Port. The original HMAS Canberra was built in England in 1928 and it’s first port of call in 1929 in Australia was at Fremantle on 25th January 1929. This ship served in World War Two and was sunk by the Japanese Navy off Guadalcanal in August 1942. The second HMAS Canberra was launched in 1978 and decommissioned in 2005 and then commissioned as a dive wreck. During its existence it was in Fremantle many times. The RAN website has the list of HMAS Canberra’s duties during this period. The Third HMAS Canberra was launched in 2011Relevance to the CityCity has a long relationship with the Royal Australian Navy and HMAS Canberra visited Fremantle many times during the three periods the HMAS Canberra has been in existence
