DESCRIPTION

Named afterNamed by Surveyor General Roe in the tradition of the main streets of English towns. See alsoGirton LaneDescriptionFollowing the completion of the Town Hall in 1887 the roadway was constructed east of William Street, by convict labour. Prior to that the street was practically only a beaten track leading to Briggs' Boys School erected in 1885. Later became Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Caldwell). High Street around the Town Hall closed to traffic in 1966.
