Named afterNamed by Surveyor General Roe in the tradition of the main streets of English towns. Prior to that the street was practically only a beaten track leading to Briggs' Boys School erected in 1885. Later became Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Caldwell). High Street around the Town Hall closed to traffic in 1966.
