Named afterCharles August Petterson died at his East Fremantle home on 12 June 1943 at the age of 86, braved the raging sea to save 90 people. That epic took place in the north west on September 13, 1887 when the 'S.S. Perth' foundered on a reef at Point Cloates during a storm. Petterson dived from the ship with a rope and remained in the water for 15 hours while rescue work was carried out. His courage was rewarded with the Royal Humane Society's silver medal and certificate. Born in Sweden, he went to South Australia at the age of 13. As a foreman, he worked on reconstruction work of the old Fremantle Jetty. He built several luggers and fishing boats in Fremantle and supervised many salvage jobs.
