Named afterSculptor - Pietro Porcelli. Born in Italy in 1872 he accompanied his father to Sydney in 1880, where he went to school, showing great promise in art, particularly sculpting and modelling. He completed his technical training in Naples and returned to Australia, drawn then to the west by the lure of the gold rush in 1898. His first work was a life-size bust of Sir John Forrest. From humble beginnings he became the sculptor of some of the State's most significant monuments, including the W.E. Marmion Memorial, the C.Y. O'Connor Memorial and the Fremantle Fallen Sailors and Soldiers Memorial. There is statue of Porcelli created by Greg James near St. John's Church. (from S. Keane's Signor Pietro G.
