HMS Ark Royal (R09) was an Audacious-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy and, when she was decommissioned in 1979, was the Royal Navy's last remaining conventional catapult and arrested-landing aircraft carrier.
Ark Royal participated in many exercises as part of the British fleet and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) squadrons but saw no combat duty. She did see much service in the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean.Relevance to the CityShows the long link between Fremantle and the Royal Navy. The ship HMS Ark Royal visited Fremantle on a few other occasions, notably in the Bicentenary in October/November 1988. Ark Royal was in port on a goodwill visit from 20-30 August, attracting much interest from the press and members of the public at the time. On Saturday 25 August, on what was a wet, blustery winter’s day, large crowds took the opportunity to tour the vessel.
