This essay considers the role that the availability of cheap accommodation, changes to the pattern of shipping that took place in the 1960's, the renovation and restoration of the Old Women's Home as a community Arts Centre and Maritime Museum played in the development of Fremantle as a centre for arts. The establishment of Fremantle Arts Centre is recognised as playing a pivotal role in this process. Other arts ventures discussed are PIFT, FTI, and Praxis. Another important element in fostering the identity of Fremantle as a conservation conscious cultural centre was the establishment of the Fremantle Society.
