AuthorO'Grady, SandraDescriptionThe Military Defence buildings located on Victoria Quay, Fremantle comprise a coherent and largely intact precinct within the greater Victoria Quay historic precinct. This sub-precinct, including the two boom buildings, Navy Commander Residence, Main Store, Store/Workshop and associated structures, were built 1939/41 to provide facilities for military operations involving the allied forces in their World War II campaigns in the Australasian region. Boom Defence Building 2 was later used as a waterside workers' assembly area, an indoor hockey stadium and during the America's Cup (1986/7) as a media centre. Since 1989 the buildings have been utilised for the Maritime Studies Department of TAFE and Fremantle Port Authority use. In 1991 the City of Fremantle in conjunction with the Australian Heritage Commission released the report "Victoria Quay and it's (sic) architecture: It's (sic) history and assessment of cultural significance" recommending that Victoria Quay be recognised as a heritage precinct, and called for further research to ascertain the full significance of the buildings and minor structures which are located on the quay.
