Parks and Recreation DepartmentDescriptionThe value of urban bushland reserved for conservation and passive recreation is being increasingly recognised by local government authorities. Sir Frederick Samson Park is a reserve located in the City of Fremantle's boundary approximately six kilometres from the city centre. The park has an area of 8.6 hectares and contains the remnant of a larger ecosystem referred to as a Tuart-Marri-Jarrah Open-Forest formation. Theres are over sixty native plant species found in the park along with many bird and animal species, including the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). A survey of the plant community found the species richness averaged 20 plants per 100m2 with 40% of these as exotic weeds. Disturbance to the natural environment has contributed to the successful colonisation of Samson Park by exotic weeds. The major environmental problem at Samson Park is disturbance to the natural environment caused by fire, trampling, uncontrolled mowing practises, excessive irrigation.
