AuthorMcIlroy, Jack, author; Meredith, David [1948-], authorCorporate AuthorAustralian Heritage CommissionDescription The area know as Whaler's Beach or Bather's Beach lies immediately to the west of Arthur Head, a location of crucial significance for the foundation of the Swan River Settlement in 1829. This report documents the project aimed to confirm the historical record of this area by testing the area for archaeological remains. As a result of initial archival research, the area of immediate archaeological interest was found to be on land vested in the Fremantle Port Authority and used by them as a maintenance yard. With their permission and cooperation access to (and clearance of) the area was facilitated in order that trial excavations could be carried out. A recording system developed by the Department of Urban Archaeology of the Museum of London was used, being adapted slightly to suit the needs of an Australian colonial excavation. Each feature uncovered whether layer, post hole, pit or wall etc. was assigned a number referred to as a context number and its position in the stratigraphical sequence noted. A brief description of each context is included in appendix 1 and detailed descriptions are on file at the W.A. Museum.
