He describes the origin of the Flying Angel Club as part of a network of seafarers centres starting with the British and International Sailor's Society and the Mission to Seafarers.The Fremantle Sailors' Rest started in 1893 and was supported by the Women's Christian Temperance Union. A new building in Marine Terrace opened in 1900. A Seamen's Institute under the flag of the Flying Angel was opened on the corner of Cliff and High streets in 1931.
