At its core, this elite comprised sixteen leading businessmen and one business woman, making up a "tight little merchant group". They were close knit in kinship, commerce, and social standing, and united where it was possible, within the brotherhood of Freemasonry. They were also a disparate assemblage: Jew, Catholic and Protestant in religion, gentry, servant and convict in origin. The people who comprised the core of Fremantle's elite were: John Bateman and his son John Wesley Bateman, William Edward Marmion, William Dalgety Moore, the three Pearse brothers, William Silas, George, and James, and the Samson brothers, Michael and William Frederick; Arthur James Diamond and James Lilly, and Mary Higham and her three sons, Edward, John Joseph, and Harry, and Charles Alexander Manning and his son Lucius Alexander. These people were at the peak of their active life and power between 1870 and 1900.
