Arthur Head stage three the excavation and conservation of a 19th century retaining wall at Bathers Beach, Fremantle, Western Australia

Early excavation work has been covered in reports by McIlroy and Meredith (1984), McIroy and Kee (1986) and Connah (1988). Later projects by archaeologists Sue Kee in 1987 and Louise Bavin in 1988 uncovered sections of a substantial limestone wall at Bathers Beach. This wall had tentatively been identified as a breakwater or jetty wall, built by the Fremantle Whaling Company in the 1830's. The aims of the current project were (i) to trench against the northern and southern faces of the wall to determine if it was a sea wall, a retaining wall or one wall of a jetty; (ii) to assess the full length and depth of the wall; (iii) to provide an accurate scale drawing of the wall for future reference and/or a photo montage; (iv) to determine definitively if the wall was built by the whalers and if not, then to decide by whom it was constructed; (v) to make recommendations for the appropriate conservation of the wallImprint[Fremantle, W.A.
