AuthorRosario, RosemaryCorporate AuthorWestern Australian Building Management AuthorityDescriptionThe Fremantle Artillery Drill Hall located at the intersection of Queen and Holdsworth Streets, Fremantle, was built in 1895/96 to provide facilities for the town's volunteer artillery corps known officially as the Fremantle No.2 Battery Field Artillery. The hall not only provided space for practising drill but also facilities for various leisure pursuits and social activities. The building continued to be used for military purposes from 1896 until 1986. When the army vacated the building the site was sold to the Fremantle City Council for the purpose of altering the road layout in the vicinity. The building was retained on a reduced site and on sold to the State Government. In 1986 woth funding from the Fremantle Arts Foundation and from the Department of the Arts, the Fly by Night Club was established, as an America's Cup Project, using the drill hall as a musicians club. This activity together with use of part of the office building as artists studios, continues the use of the building as a social focus for the young people of Fremantle.
